As the story suggested, islands are on the verge of undergoing drastic geographical changes. Two island nations have taken different approaches to face such challenges. Tuvalu is an island nation that is trying to become the world’s first digital-first nation. Given the island’s imminent disappearance, Tuvalu aims to digitize its history, culture, geography, and lives of inhabitants in the hopes of creating a space for Tuvaluan life to continue and grow. On the other hand, the Maldives is learning to adapt to changes in the shape of its islands. While its lands are not necessarily at risk of vanishing completely, the Maldives must solve the difficult obstacle of building infrastructure that’s both modular and durable.
