The idea behind AWA is that by putting creators first, we all benefit. Our tagline says it all: “Where the best creators do their best work, for you.” We think the quality of our original stories backs that up, and our fans, critics, and the industry seem to agree with us.

Our “Creator of the Month” program lets us spotlight a different writer, artist, colorist, letterer or more each month, allowing you to get a glimpse into what makes them tick. (What’s more, you may ask? As you may know, AWA is venturing into film and TV, so you may just see a director or other movie auteur show up on these pages over time, too!)

What is your favorite comic character or fictional character of all time? Why?
My favorite comic book character might have to be Morley Mack from Kurtis Wiebe and Riley Rossmo’s GREEN WAKE. My favorite fictional character in literature might have to be Josef Kavalier from Michael Chabon’s THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER AND CLAY.

Who most influenced you in the world of comics?
Brian K. Vaughan and Jason Aaron.

Who most influenced you outside of the world of comics?
David Lynch, Alex Garland, Darren Aronofsky, Sofia Coppola, Jordan Peele, Donna Tartt, Greta Gerwig, David Fincher, Thomas Newman, and Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross to name a few.

Tell me about your favorite story/panel/art page from an AWA series you’ve worked on.
Oof. Where do I begin? Felipe Cunha’s ability to draw such intricate and grounding detail in EVERY panel is truly astonishing. But perhaps my favorite sequence from GATSBY would have to be the introduction to Gatsby’s epic estate. I wanted to create a once-in-a-lifetime party that would feature excitingly immersive experiences in every corner of the mansion. I let my imagination run wild and Felipe was able to keep pace every single step of the way.

Tell me about a favorite story/panel/art page from an AWA series you did NOT work on.
Honestly, since having the honor of Rahzzah crafting an absolutely PERFECT cover that now graces my book, I get excited every time he shares a sneak peek at his newest creations.

If you were a comic book character, would you rather be the hero or the villain?
Villain

What’s your favorite comic book or graphic novel?
Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s Y: THE LAST MAN, because it was the series that inspired me to write my own.

What’s your favorite moment in comics ever?
Every single page of Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera’s SCALPED series.

What’s your favorite comic book genre?
Romantic/dramatic, slice-of-life stories.

Would you rather be invisible or have the ability to fly?
Invisible. I hate heights.

Do you think you could survive in a zombie apocalypse?
I am basically blind without my glasses, so no.

Do you listen to music while you’re creating?
I do. Rarely can I write well in total silence.

What is your favorite song or band?
Nirvana. Favorite song rotates regularly through their discography, but right now it’s “Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle”.

What is the best advice you ever got?
12 years ago, I had the pleasure of chatting with Geoff Johns, who was gracious enough to look over a pitch I had on me. He pointed out that bad lettering is the quickest way to a rejection letter.

Dog person, cat person, or…?
Dog

Where is your happy place?
Scotland.

Tell us one of your guilty pleasures.
Christmas movies.

If you were stranded on an island with any 3 people — real or fictional, living or dead — who would you pick?
My partner Mercedes. There’s no one else I’d rather be stranded with. Well, maybe Kurt Cobain.

What’s the last movie you watched?
The Social Network.

What’s the last comic you read?
Don’t remember. The last ones that I purchased recently are Daniel Warren Johnson’s DO A POWERBOMB and Zoe Thorogood’s IT’S LONELY AT THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH.

What is your favorite type of pizza/pizza topping?
Pepperoni, black olives, and banana peppers.

If you could have anything in the world for a last meal, what would it be?
I’d happily accept a reservation at any of the Michelin 3-starred restaurants in the world.
