In 2020, AWA Studios unleashed a bold new superhero universe with The Resistance. Now, original creator J. Michael Stracynski has returned to tell a romantic superhero story with U and I.
AWA announced the new series and Strazcynski’s return on X (formerly Twitter). The new series will feature art and covers by Mike Choi, as well as letters by Sal Cipriano. Beyond detailing “an improbable romance,” U and I will also further expand the existing Resistance Universe.
The new series centers around Isabelle, a down-on-her-luck young woman. Her fortunes change after a chance encounter with the superhero called U. Sparks fly between the two, but a different fire erupts after U runs afoul of a vicious crime syndicate.
AWA’s Chief Creative Officer Axel Alonso confirmed that U and I can be enjoyed by romance fans and those unfamiliar with the Resistance Universe. “This action-packed, thrilling love story is both a perfect way to introduce readers to the world of Reborns,” Alonso enthused. He also confirmed that the six-part series “can also be read as a standalone story.”
The Resistance Universe Explained
AWA launched the Resistance Universe in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 lockdowns. The series is set in a universe not unlike our own where a global pandemic has devastated the population of Earth. In the ashes of the disaster, however, humanity was reborn.
Many people, dubbed “Reborns,” developed fantastic powers as a result of the plague. This gave rise to a new age of heroes and villains as the Reborns fought to save or conquer the Earth in the wake of “The Great Death.” This concept was born from a host of ideas from J. Michael Straczynski, who was fascinated by “where the premise for science fiction ends and the superhero universe begins.”
U and I #1 releases on February 7, 2024.
